Newborn Photography Safety
Newborn Photography Safety is often forgotten when looking for a newborn photographer. It is my job as a professional to keep all babies safe during their photo shoot! The professional photos that you see where the babies are blissfully sleeping in a tree or are holding up their heads with their own arms and hands, should be carefully created in post processing. These professional photographers have carefully placed the newborn in solid HANDS and edited the hands out later. It is always wise to ask your photographer if they have educated themselves in newborn photography safety.
Here are some safety tips that ALL newborn photographers should be practicing during their sessions:
Keep baby comfortable.
Newborn babies love their environment to be warm. It is very common to have the room at 82 degrees, while baby is in a loose onesie or naked. Never force baby into ANY position. Firm, solid handling is a must when you are trying to settle a newborn, but you must listen to the cues of the baby! They will let you know if they are uncomfortable.
Never leave baby unattended.
Be prepared with your camera, prepared with your settings and NEVER, EVER go out of reach of baby. Babies are unpredictable! Always have a solid foundation for baby to rest on.
Be aware of baby’s airway.
When placing your little model in different positions, it is imperative to make an open airway your number one safety concern. Pay attention to the angle and positioning of his/her neck, so as to not cause any blockage.
There is a lot of information out there! So do your research and educate yourself in Newborn Photography Safety!
